The winemaking team at Silenus Winery has been working on this Tawny Reserve for the past 10 years. There are two basic types of port, Ruby and Tawny, that have a lot in common. Both are fortified and sweet and use the same grape varieties and undergo a period of aging.

Ruby Ports tend to be aged less and in larger vessels and usually showcase bright fruity flavors. Tawny Ports tend to be aged longer, at least 10 years, in wine barrels and usually lead with dried fruit flavors, a touch of leather and light creaminess.

The Silenus Tawny Reserve is a luscious mix of both styles. The wine has been aged for over 10 years and has a rich tawny underpinning and the addition of our Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve wine for topping over the years has cut the sweetness and brightened up the palate to show more like a Ruby. The resulting wine is fantastic and bright now and with age and become more Tawny-like in the cellar.

Tasting Notes:

This rich full-bodied port was aged for 10 years where it developed robust aromas of spiced cherries, plum and vanilla. The palate is bright and vivid with notes of cherry, fig and a hint of black currant dusted with cedar and vanilla. This port is perfectly balanced and not too sweet allowing the mid-palate to show both vibrant red fruit and yet be deep and rich for a satisfying finish to any cheese course or dinner. It is fantastic now but can cellared with proper storage for future enjoyment.
